THE WAR IN THE BALKANS

HISTORIA

Contenido

  • The war in the Balkans included the different conflicts that took place between 1991 and 1995 involving the different territories formed after the breakup of the former state of Yugoslavia.
  • These events showed the great divisions between the EU member states and the lack of coordination of EU foreign policy.
  • The origin of these confrontations was related to the fall of communism and the rise of new nationalisms in Europe.
  • The EU was one of the agents most involved in this conflict, with it contributing the largest contingent of UN Blue Helmets and making a great effort to mediate between the different sides involved in the conflict.
  • Even so, it was the USA that effectively brought this conflict to an end through the Dayton agreements that were signed on 14th December 1995.
  • All of this led the EU to rethink its security policy.
