THE WAR IN THE BALKANS

The war in the Balkans included the different conflicts that took place between 1991 and 1995 involving the different territories formed after the breakup of the former state of Yugoslavia.
These events showed the great divisions between the EU member states and the lack of coordination of EU foreign policy.
The origin of these confrontations was related to the fall of communism and the rise of new nationalisms in Europe.
The EU was one of the agents most involved in this conflict, with it contributing the largest contingent of UN Blue Helmets and making a great effort to mediate between the different sides involved in the conflict.
Even so, it was the USA that effectively brought this conflict to an end through the Dayton agreements that were signed on 14^th December 1995.
All of this led the EU to rethink its security policy.
