UE.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Contenido<\/h3>\n<div class=\"contenidos_tema\">\n<ul>\n<li>Since the initial nucleus of 6 countries\u00a0<strong>(Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg)<\/strong>\u00a0was established, the number of European Union member states has progressively increased, with its membership reaching 28 countries with the incorporation of Croatia in 2013.<\/li>\n<li>In the course of its history, the EU has passed through seven processes of enlargement (see map):\n<ul>\n<li>1973: United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark.<\/li>\n<li>1981: Greece.<\/li>\n<li>1986: Spain and Portugal.<\/li>\n<li>1995: Austria, Finland and Sweden.<\/li>\n<li>2004: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta and Cyprus,<\/li>\n<li>2007: Bulgaria and Rumania.<\/li>\n<li>2013: Croatia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The requisites for membership of the EU are laid down in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/legislation_summaries\/glossary\/accession_criteria_copenhague_es.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagen Criteria<\/a>; these are of three types:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Political:<\/strong>\u00a0the existence of stable institutions that guarantee democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and the protection of minorities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic:<\/strong>\u00a0the existence of a viable market economy with the capacity to resist competition and stand up to market forces within the EU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legal (<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/legislation_summaries\/glossary\/community_acquis_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community acquis<\/a>):<\/strong>\u00a0this refers to assimilating EU legislation. They must also accept the EU objectives of political, economic and monetary union.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To these three requirements, it is also necessary to add\u00a0<strong>geography,<\/strong>\u00a0in other words, forming part of the European continent.<\/li>\n<li>The unanimity of the member states is fundamental for deciding the entry of a candidate to form part of the EU.<\/li>\n<li>From a candidacy being accepted, which first requires complying with the political criteria of the EU, there is a long process of negotiations which finally leads to EU entry.<\/li>\n<li>The extensions that saw the entry of Greece, Spain and Portugal and all of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe also represent the end of a process of transition towards democracy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; UE.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><h3>Contents<\/h3><div class=\"contenidos_tema\"><ul><li>Since the initial nucleus of 6 countries\u00a0<strong>(Italy, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg)<\/strong>\u00a0was established, the number of European Union member states has progressively increased, with its membership reaching 28 countries with the incorporation of Croatia in 2013.<\/li><li>In the course of its history, the EU has passed through seven processes of enlargement (see map):<ul><li>1973: United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark.<\/li><li>1981: Greece.<\/li><li>1986: Spain and Portugal.<\/li><li>1995: Austria, Finland and Sweden.<\/li><li>2004: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta and Cyprus,<\/li><li>2007: Bulgaria and Rumania.<\/li><li>2013: Croatia.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The requisites for membership of the EU are laid down in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/legislation_summaries\/glossary\/accession_criteria_copenhague_es.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copenhagen Criteria<\/a>; these are of three types:<ul><li><strong>Political:<\/strong>\u00a0the existence of stable institutions that guarantee democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and the protection of minorities.<\/li><li><strong>Economic:<\/strong>\u00a0the existence of a viable market economy with the capacity to resist competition and stand up to market forces within the EU.<\/li><li><strong>Legal (<a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/legislation_summaries\/glossary\/community_acquis_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community acquis<\/a>):<\/strong>\u00a0this refers to assimilating EU legislation. They must also accept the EU objectives of political, economic and monetary union.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>To these three requirements, it is also necessary to add\u00a0<strong>geography,<\/strong>\u00a0in other words, forming part of the European continent.<\/li><li>The unanimity of the member states is fundamental for deciding the entry of a candidate to form part of the EU.<\/li><li>From a candidacy being accepted, which first requires complying with the political criteria of the EU, there is a long process of negotiations which finally leads to EU
