The company\u2019s objective was to build and exploit a line between these two major cities and passing through Lleida; the construction of the line was completed in 1862.<\/p>\n<p>In 1865, this company merged with the\u00a0<em>Ferrocarril de Zaragoza a Pamplona<\/em>.[ii]\u00a0The resulting new company, called the\u00a0<em>Compa\u00f1\u00eda de los Ferrocarriles de Zaragoza a Pamplona y a Barcelona<\/em><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200814133559\/file:\/\/\/C:\/Documents%20and%20Settings\/Administrador\/Mis%20documentos\/Dropbox\/UOC\/Projectes%202013\/LLP%20-%20Jean%20Monnet\/Int%20Europea%20-%20LLP%20-%20Jean%20Monnet\/Gen%C3%A8ric\/Fichas%20RA\/Ingl%C3%A9s\/UdL%20Geog%20-%20J%20Marti-H%20-%20fitxa_mollerussa%20-%20EN%20-%20revised.doc#_edn3\">[iii]<\/a>\u00a0was then also absorbed, in 1878, by the\u00a0<em>Compa\u00f1\u00eda de los Caminos de Hierro del Norte de Espa\u00f1a<\/em><em><strong>[iv]<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The station currently provides medium-distance, Iberian-gauge services on the line that runs between L\u2019Hospitalet de Llobregat and Lleida (figure 1).<\/p>\n<p>Another station was built next to the first one in order to serve the Mollerussa-Balaguer line. This metric gauge line was 18 km long and was served by eight stations. It also had two branch lines: a 2 km line towards Men\u00e0rguens and a 1.3 km line towards the Merlet estate. Its construction, which began in 1899, was undertaken by Manuel Bertran y Cia., an industrial company from Barcelona, but the line was not officially opened until 1905. It was originally built to transport sugar beet to the sugar factory of Men\u00e0rguens. At the time, sugar beet plantations covered large areas of the\u00a0<em>comarques<\/em>\u00a0(local districts) of La Noguera, L\u2019Urgell, El Segri\u00e1, Les Garrigues and La Llitera.
